Mableton Redevelopment Powers referendum and Cobb Commission District 3 race both too close to call in partial, unofficial returns
At 10:59 p.m. on Nov. 3, state results showed "No" ahead on the city's redevelopment referendum and Democrat Kevin Redmon 549 votes ahead of Republican JoAnn K. Birrell. Neither contest had a single fully reported precinct. Cobb plans to certify results Nov. 9.

Mableton's "Redevelopment Powers Law" referendum has not been decided. Unofficial, partial returns show "No" narrowly ahead.
As of 10:59 p.m. ET on Nov. 3, the Georgia Secretary of State's Cobb County results page had "No" at 14,933 votes (52.0%) and "Yes" at 13,796 (48.0%). The page listed 10 of the referendum's 14 precincts as partly reported and none as fully reported. It does not say where the other four precincts stand.
The page warns that results are unofficial and "counts can still change." Hello Mableton is not calling either contest in this story.
Cobb Commission District 3
The race for the Cobb County Board of Commissioners District 3 seat is also undecided. At 10:59 p.m., the same page had Democrat Kevin Redmon at 48,712 votes (50.3%) and Republican JoAnn K. Birrell at 48,163 (49.7%), out of 96,875 votes counted. That is a 549-vote gap.
Of the district's 53 precincts, the page lists "0 fully reported, 41 partially reported, 0 not reported." It does not say where the remaining 12 precincts stand. The page puts "(I)" after Birrell's name. That mark usually means a candidate is the incumbent, but the page does not explain it.
Hello Mableton has not confirmed whether any Mableton address is in District 3. The county's voter maps page links to an official Commission District 3 map. The county says residents can use Georgia's My Voter Page to check their registration and polling place and to see their sample ballot.
What comes next
The county says the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration is scheduled to certify results at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. The meeting will stream on the CobbTV YouTube channel.
What we don't know yet
- How many ballots are left to count in either contest, and what kinds of ballots they are.
- Whether any part of Mableton is in Commission District 3.
- Whether the final District 3 margin will be close enough for either candidate to ask for a recount.
- Whether either candidate has said anything about the results so far.
