South Cobb Regional Library marks 20 years, and 10 years of its '1000 Words' art panels, on Nov. 14
The evening at the Clay Road library also honors panels about reading, made partly from discarded books, that came out of a 2016-17 National Endowment for the Arts project with the South Cobb Arts Alliance.
South Cobb Regional Library on Clay Road will celebrate its 20th anniversary from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. The event also marks 10 years of "1000 Words," a series of art panels about reading that hangs in the library.
Cobb County Public Library posted the event on Eventbrite and on the county's events calendar. Both listings say the evening honors the library's 20th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of "1000 Words," by South Cobb Arts Alliance artist Miles Davis. They call the series "a community shared National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) project created in partnership with the South Cobb Arts Alliance and SCRL." Neither listing gives a program for the evening.
How the panels got there
The arts alliance's galleries page says its work showing art in libraries "started at the South Cobb Regional Library with an SCAA proposal to include library space as part of the NEA grant project." The page says Davis made the original ten panels partly from discarded books, "to depict images of reading," for the alliance's 2016-17 NEA project. They were installed at South Cobb Regional, and one piece now hangs permanently at Sewell Mill Library.
Cobb In Focus profiled the alliance in 2021. It reported that the NEA gave the alliance a 2016-17 grant to broaden its outreach and promote local artists. It also reported that six pieces from the series "were privately acquired for donation to the South Cobb Regional Library." The sources reviewed for this story don't give the grant amount or say how many panels hang at the library today.
Davis's website lists "1000 Words, South Cobb Library, Mableton, GA" among his solo exhibitions. It also describes him as "Selected Artist for the National Endowment for the Arts Grant through South Cobb Arts Alliance." The site says he earned a painting degree from Auburn University in 2003 and lists him as Director at Large for the alliance.
What isn't confirmed
The Cobb Courier reported on Oct. 30 that Davis lives in Mableton and will attend the celebration. The county's listings don't say either thing. His own website calls him an "Atlanta artist," and the 2021 Cobb In Focus article called him a "Smyrna artist." Hello Mableton has not confirmed where he lives or whether he plans to attend.
